Exactly what the title says. I’m writing this after watching an incredible podcast on YouTube, which I’ll suggest in a bit. But upon finishing it, I found myself reflecting on how it shifted my perspective on a few things I had previously believed to be true. It wasn’t until I gave it some thought in retrospect that I realized how much it had changed my view. In our daily lives, we rarely have the time, or the inclination, to reflect on the effects of the media we consume. But believe it or not, I think every piece of content we interact with online changes us in some way.
Enough talking in the air: The podcast I was watching is "NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang's Vision For the Future" by Cleo Abram. The point that changed my perspective was how optimistic the entire podcast was. If you've ever noticed, most content online about AI tends to be on the pessimistic side. "AI is taking away jobs" (the obvious one), "AI is making humans slower", "AI could pose huge security risks", "The world will be dominated (or worse yet, replaced) by robots" are just some of the many disconcerting phrases we hear about modern technology in the media. And while it is absolutely worthwhile to think about these problems, I think it's equally valuable, and a better use of our time, to think optimistically about the technology that is being created and invest our time and effort in solving the concerning problems.
In the podcast, when asked how he views modern innovation in AI, I loved the answer Jensen Huang gave. It was something along the lines of: "I’m surrounded by superhuman people, people who are the best in the world at what they do! I’m surrounded by thousands of them. They can do their job far better than I can. But it’s never once made me feel worthless in my position. Instead, it’s empowered me to pursue the future I’m envisioning, knowing that I have the support of incredibly intelligent people by my side. I'd like everyone to apply that same analogy to AI. The question you should be asking is: How can I use AI to empower me and make my life better and more impactful?"
This is the key takeaway I got from the podcast. If this sounds intriguing to you, I highly recommend giving it a watch. I’m sure you’ll find it worthwhile!
But yes, this is an example of how a piece of media changed my perspective—and why it was a good thing.
See you again when I have something interesting to write. Adios!
